Install your first app

What you need

Time: 10 minutes

  • You are signed in to the dashboard.
  • The masjid computer can reach the internet.

OpenMasjidOS on its own does very little. The apps do the work: prayer timetables on your screens, a donation page, madrasa fees. This page is how you get one.

Step 1 — Open the App Store

Click App Store at the top of the dashboard.

Result:

A grid of apps, each with an icon, a name and one line describing it.

Step 2 — Install one

  1. Click the app you want.
  2. Read the description, then click Install.
  3. Wait. The button changes as it works.
Result:

The app downloads and starts. This takes one to five minutes the first time. The button then reads Installed, and the app appears on your dashboard.

Step 3 — Open it

Go back to Dashboard and click Open on the app's card.

Result:

The app opens, already signed in as you. It matches your dashboard's light or dark theme.

What every button on the card does

Button What it does
Open The app's own screen.
Turn off Stops the app. Everything it has saved stays.
Start Starts it again.
App options The three-dot menu, with the rest of these.
View logs What the app is printing. Useful to paste into Discord.
Check for update Offers a newer version if there is one. Data is kept.
Pin to dock Puts it in the row of small icons. Changes nothing else.
Remove Uninstalls it. See the caution below.

Removing an app

Removing asks two separate questions, and the difference matters.

  1. Open App options, then click Remove.
  2. A dialog asks Remove {app}? and says it turns the app off and takes it off your dashboard.
  3. There is a separate tick box: Also delete this app's data (cannot be undone).
  4. Leave that box UNTICKED unless you are certain.
  5. Click Remove app.

Which app to install first

If you want Install
Prayer times on the TVs OpenMasjid Display
A donation page people can use from home OpenMasjid Donations
A tap-to-give tablet at the door OpenMasjid Kiosk
Madrasa fees and invoices OpenMasjid Students

Display is the easiest first app, because it needs no outside account. Install it, open it, and you have something to show the committee in ten minutes.

Checkpoint

An app appears on your dashboard, its card says it is running, and clicking Open signs you straight in without asking for another password.
