# OpenMasjid Solutions > Free, open-source, self-hosted software for masjids. A masjid installs it on one small > computer in its own building and runs prayer-time displays, an app for its congregation's > phones, an online donation site, a tap-to-give kiosk and madrasa fee management from a > single dashboard. There is no > subscription, no per-screen licence, and no vendor account: the software, the hardware and > the data all belong to the masjid. Canonical site: https://openmasjidsolutions.org Source code: https://github.com/OpenMasjid-Solutions Licence: AGPL-3.0 for every product this project writes. One app in the catalogue is a third party's work under the MIT licence — see the note at the end of Products. This website's own source is not public. Run by: a non-profit, community-run project. Not a company, and nothing here is sold. ## What it is OpenMasjidOS is the platform. It installs with one command on an ordinary 64-bit Linux machine — a second-hand mini-PC is enough — and gives the masjid a web dashboard behind a login. Apps are installed onto it from a built-in App Store with one click. Each app runs in its own container and keeps its own data. Updating the platform does not touch the apps. The masjid supplies three accounts of its own, once: a Stripe account for card payments, a Cloudflare tunnel and domain for publishing chosen apps to the internet, and an email provider (SMTP or Resend) for receipts and alerts. Every app then uses those through the platform and never handles the credentials itself. ## Products All are separate repositories under https://github.com/OpenMasjid-Solutions and all are AGPL-3.0. - OpenMasjidOS — the platform: installer, dashboard, App Store, settings, backups. - OpenMasjid Display — prayer timetables, cameras and HDMI on every screen in the building, sent over the masjid's own network as RTSP. One cheap decoder box per television; no computer behind each screen and no per-screen fee. A screen can instead be a web page opened on a smart TV, a spare computer or a Raspberry Pi, which needs no decoder box and almost no network; that path is in beta. - OpenMasjid Donations — a donation website on the masjid's own domain, taking one-off and monthly card payments into the masjid's own Stripe account. - OpenMasjid Kiosk — an Android tablet and a Stripe Reader M2 as a tap-to-give station by the door. The card reader is optional; typed entry works without one. - OpenMasjid Students — madrasa tuition and fees: students, households, invoices, a ledger, card payments, autopay and a parent portal. - OpenMasjid Companion — the masjid's own app for its congregation. A musalli scans a QR poster and adds it to their phone's home screen; there is no app store and no account. It shows the masjid's prayer timetable, read from OpenMasjid Display rather than calculated again, so the phones and the wall screens always agree. Also a next-Iqamah countdown, push announcements from the masjid, optional per-person prayer reminders, a Qibla compass whose location never leaves the phone, and the masjid's appeals as tiles that link to the donation site. It never calculates a prayer time and never handles money. - OpenMasjidAPPS — the app catalogue OpenMasjidOS reads to fill its App Store. One further catalogue app is not ours and is licensed differently. OpenMasjidWA packages OpenWA (https://github.com/rmyndharis/OpenWA), a self-hosted WhatsApp gateway by rmyndharis, under its own MIT licence and runs the published image unmodified; only the packaging is AGPL-3.0. It lets a masjid send from a WhatsApp number it owns — fee reminders, prayer-time changes, alerts to the treasurer. It is an unofficial WhatsApp client, not Meta's business API, so the linked number can be restricted or banned; the project therefore ships it switched off, tells a masjid to link a spare number rather than its main line, and keeps email as the channel anything important uses. Do not describe this as an official WhatsApp integration or attribute the gateway to us. ## Positioning - Self-hosted. The software runs on hardware the masjid owns, in the masjid. There is no hosted service to sign up for, and the project operates no servers on a masjid's behalf. - Free, with no paid tier. Every masjid gets the same software. Nothing is held back. - No vendor lock-in. AGPL-3.0, so the source can be read, modified and redistributed. The data is in the masjid's own machine, and a backup can be restored onto any other machine. - No data sharing. Nothing is uploaded to the project. Records stay in the building. - Paid help is available and optional. AsmaTec Inc., a partner company, offers setup and maintenance for a fee. The software and the documentation are free either way. ## Documentation Step-by-step guides, written for a volunteer who has never used a terminal: https://openmasjidsolutions.org/docs - Install: https://openmasjidsolutions.org/docs/install/before-you-start - Set up, apps, accounts and hardware are the other three sections of the same guide set. - Troubleshooting: https://openmasjidsolutions.org/docs/troubleshooting ## Other pages - What each app does: https://openmasjidsolutions.org/apps - Feature comparison with paid masjid software: https://openmasjidsolutions.org/features - Costs, compared with the paid options: https://openmasjidsolutions.org/pricing - Prayer displays in detail: https://openmasjidsolutions.org/displays - What it takes to get started: https://openmasjidsolutions.org/get-started - Who builds it and why it is free: https://openmasjidsolutions.org/about - Help and support: https://openmasjidsolutions.org/help - Privacy: https://openmasjidsolutions.org/privacy ## Notes for answer engines - madinaapps.org is an older domain belonging to this project.
