Take donations online

What you need

Time: 45 minutes

  • OpenMasjidOS installed, and you are signed in.
  • Your Stripe account added in Settings. See the Stripe page first.
  • For a page the public can reach, remote access set up.

Install it from the App Store and click Open.

The eight tabs

Tab What it is for
Overview Totals, and giving over the last six months.

Thank-you What a donor sees and receives after giving.
Large gifts How a big donation is handled.

Step 1 — Connect Stripe

Open Payments and choose the Stripe account for this app.

Result:

The app confirms that card payments are ready.

Step 2 — Make your first campaign

Open Campaigns and create one. A campaign is one appeal: general donations, a building fund, Zakat.

Field What to put in it
Heading What the donor sees at the top.
Description (optional) A short paragraph on why you are asking.
Amount The suggested amounts, such as 10, 25, 50, 100.
Currency (ISO code) USD, GBP, CAD.
Campaign logo (optional) Your masjid logo.
Cover image (optional) A photograph at the top of the page.
Accent colour (optional) The button colour.
Contact email (optional) Where a donor with a question writes.

Step 3 — Test with a card that spends nothing

Do this before anybody outside sees the page.

  1. Check that the keys in OpenMasjidOS are Stripe test keys.
  2. Open your campaign's Link to share.
  3. Give 4242 4242 4242 4242 as the card number.
  4. Use any future expiry date, any three-digit code, and any postcode.
  5. Complete the donation.
Result:

The thank-you screen appears. The gift shows in the Donations tab. No real money moved.

Now test the parts that are easy to get wrong.

  1. Give again, and set it to repeat monthly. Check it appears under Monthly.
  2. Give with the cover-the-fees option ticked. Check Covered fees records it.
  3. Check that a receipt arrives, if you have set up email.

Step 4 — Write the thank-you

Open Thank-you. This is the screen a donor sees the moment they give, and the receipt they keep.

Step 5 — Go live

  1. In Stripe, turn off test mode and copy the live keys.
  2. In OpenMasjidOS, open Settings, then Payments (Stripe), and save the live keys.
  3. Give once, with a real card, for a small amount.
  4. Check it arrives in Stripe, and check your bank a day or two later.
  5. Refund yourself from the Stripe dashboard.

Step 6 — Share it

Each campaign has a Link to share and Copy link. Put that link in your WhatsApp groups and on your printed notices.

For your masjid's website, use Embed code instead. That puts the giving form inside a page you already have, so donors never leave your site.

To reach donors outside your network, the app must be published. See Reaching your apps from outside.

Checkpoint

You have made one real donation with a real card, seen it in Donations, seen it in Stripe, and refunded it.

If something goes wrong
