The address on your network

What you need

Time: 15 minutes

  • You are signed in to the dashboard.
  • The password for your router.

The dashboard lives at an address like https://192.168.1.50. That address is handed out by your router, and a router can hand out a different one later. This page stops that happening.

Why the address can change

Your router gives each device an address for a period of time, and normally gives the same one back. After a power cut, or a long holiday with the machine off, that can change. The router gives the address to something else, and gives your machine a new one.

Then the link on the noticeboard stops working and your screens lose the server.

Fix the address at the router

The fix is made in your router, not in OpenMasjidOS. It is called a DHCP reservation, and it means "always give this machine this address".

  1. Find the machine's current address in Settings, then Network, then Address.
  2. Sign in to your router.
  3. Find the list of connected devices, called Attached devices or DHCP.
  4. Find your machine, usually named openmasjid.
  5. Choose the option to reserve or make static, and keep the address it already has.
  6. Save.
Result:

The router lists your machine with a reserved address. The dashboard keeps working at the same address it used before.

The Network panel

Settings, then Network, shows two facts and gives you one button.

Item What it is
Hostname The machine's name. Shown for reference.
Address The address the dashboard is reachable at.
Reconnect apps Tells your apps where to find the dashboard again.

After you move the machine

If you move the masjid computer to a different network, or its address changes, the apps still hold the old address. They cannot reach the dashboard, so single sign-on stops and receipts stop being sent.

  1. Open Settings, then Network.
  2. Click Reconnect apps.
Result:

The apps are pointed at the new address. Open one and check that it signs you in.

Checkpoint

Your router lists the masjid computer with a reserved address, and the dashboard still opens at that address after you restart the machine.

openmasjidos.local does not work.OpenMasjidOS does not set up that name. It does not exist.Use the address, and reserve it at the router so you only have to learn it once.
