Open it for the first time

What you need

Time: 5 minutes

  • OpenMasjidOS installed, from one of the three guides before this one.
  • The address the installer printed.
  • A phone or a laptop on the same network as the masjid computer.

Step 1 — Find the address

When the installer finished, it printed a box. Inside that box is the address, and it looks like this:

https://192.168.1.50

If you closed the terminal, get the address again from the masjid computer.

hostname -I
Result:

One address, such as 192.168.1.50. Put https:// in front of it.

Step 2 — Get past the browser warning

Type the address into your browser.

Result:

The browser says Not secure, or Your connection is not private, or shows a warning page. This is expected, and it is not a fault.

  1. Click Advanced.
  2. Click Proceed, or Continue to this site.

You do this once on each device that opens the dashboard.

Step 3 — Choose your route

You now see a screen headed Welcome to OpenMasjidOS, with Let's create your admin account to get started. underneath it.

There are two routes from here. Read both before you pick.

Route A — a new masjid, starting fresh

Continue on this screen and create the admin account. This is almost everybody.

Route B — you are replacing a machine

If this computer is replacing an older one that ran OpenMasjidOS, do not create an account. Look for Restore from a backup on the same screen and use that instead.

Step 4 — Create the admin account

Fill in the four fields.

Field What to put in it
Your name The name you will sign in with. This is your username, not a display name.
Email Where OpenMasjidOS sends alerts, such as an app going offline. It is not your sign-in.
Password At least 12 characters.
Confirm password The same password again.

Then click Create account.

Result:

The dashboard opens. You see the system stats along the top and an empty space for apps.

Checkpoint

You are signed in and looking at the dashboard. Refreshing the page keeps you signed in, and opening the address from a second device shows the sign-in screen rather than the setup screen.

If something goes wrong

What you seeWhyWhat to do
The page will not load at all.Usually http instead of https, or a device on a different network.Check the address begins with https. Check the phone is on the masjid Wi-Fi and not mobile data.
The browser gives no way past the warning. Some browsers hide the option, and a few school or work devices remove it.Click the warning text, then look for Advanced. If there is nothing, try a different browser or a different device.
It says the password is too short. The minimum is 12 characters.Use a longer one. Three unrelated words together is enough.
I see a sign-in screen, not a setup screen. An admin account already exists on this machine.Somebody has set it up already. Ask them. If nobody knows the password, see Forgot your password? on that screen.
